April 12, 1961 marks the first manned space flight. The 27-year-old Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin circled the Earth for 1 hour and 48 minutes aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft.The holiday is celebrated in Russia and some other former USSR countries. April 12 also marks the first flight of the Space Shuttle about twenty years later. (wikipedia)
