April 12, 1961 marks the first manned space flight. The 27-year-old Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin circled the Earth for 1 hour and 48 minutes aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft.The holiday is celebrated in Russia and some other former USSR countries. On March 01, 1912, Russian scientist Boris Evseyevich Chertok was born. Chertok pioneered numerous control systems of ballistic missiles and spacecraft. He was the author of a four-volume book titled "Rockets and People," which is renowned as the definitive source of information about the history of the Soviet space program. (astronautix)

February 3, 1966 was a day of  two 'firsts' during the Space Race between the United States and Soviet Union.

The satellite remained in orbit until 1970 and was the first spacecraft to detect the Van Allen radiation belt. September 1, 1969 - The Canadian government created Telesat Canada, a corporation with mixed private and government ownership to operate Canadian domestic communications satellites. Telesat, which launched Canada's Anik, Nimiq and MSAT communications satellites, was privatized in 1993. (Canadian Space History) Over the years ILS has launched 7 satellites for Telesat.

July 2011

July 2011 marked the end of NASA's shuttle history, which spanned over three decades. On 08 July, the Atlantis Space Shuttle lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center. The Atlantis and its crew will deliver the Raffaello multipurpose logistics module containing supplies and spare parts for the International Space Station. The mission is set to last 12 days.(eweek)

On the 16 June 1963, Valentina Tereshkova become both the first woman and the first civilian to fly in space. During her three-day mission, she performed various tests on herself to collect data on the female body's reaction to spaceflight.
