What a Weekend

The ILS launch team has settled in at Baikonur. Team members report that they celebrated Independence Day by reading Thomas Jefferson's draft of the Declaration of Independence on the way to Yubileiny Airport at 0800 to offload the satellite test equipment, and then working until 1830.

They had a picnic the following day to commemorate the holiday.

Meanwhile, the spacecraft has landed!

Early Sunday morning the Inmarsat-4 F3 satellite arrived at Yubileiny Airport aboard an AN-124-100 Ruslan aircraft owned by Russia’s Polyet cargo airlines. The satellite was taken to Building 92A-50 for assembly and testing.

Everything else is going up to par, as well.

Pictures soon, as well as some first-hand reports from the launch team…

Reflections from a first timer in Baikonur

On the 5th, after completing a full day’s work, we moved on to the Proton Club auditorium where our campaign security manager presented the safety and security briefing.

Following the briefing, we headed back to the Fili Hotel for a belated Independence Day BBQ. It was a fantastic way to bring all the launch campaign personnel together so that we could get to know the other people that will help make this launch a success. In short, it was a great team-building exercise!

From a newbie's perspective, it was great to have more quality time with people. At work everyone is concentrating on the jobs at hand and there is little time for chatter. This BBQ was a great way to see other sides of people and to get to know them on a more personal level and to find out how they got into the space industry. Even with the different languages being spoken, we all managed to come away with new friends and better understanding of each other.

*~*

On the 6th, the SC landed at Yublieiny Airfield. I just wanted to finally be able to see what the SC looks like and if it’s really as big as I have been told. I was in no way, shape or form let down.

*~*

Oh and about the spacecraft…

Electrical and propulsion testing have already started.

Photos soon…promise

After taking a break to visit and take photos in Baikonur town and at the Yuri Gagarin space museum (see Gallery), the mission team is back to work. So far everything is running smoothly. Both the launch vehicle team and the spacecraft team continued their separate operations and test protocols. The spacecraft Xenon loading was completed on the 18th . Oxidizer and fuel loading is planned for this week. The Proton team will be moving the payload fairing to a stand in anticipation of joint operations and mating with the spacecraft. Keep checking back for more updates.

Another Photo Blog!

The team has sent us pictures of what they’ve been up to over the last few days.

This photo is of the memorial tree grove behind the Cosmonaut Hotel. The trees were planted by early generations of cosmonauts as a reminder to future cosmonauts of what they are leaving behind. The garden overlooks not only the vast surrounding grassland, but the Syr Darya River as well. It is tradition for cosmonauts to walk through the memorial grove the day before the launch. The team must feel very privileged to be able to share in that experience.

This photo is of the signing of the Payload Fairing. One of the team members from Inmarsat has joined in the tradition of signing the logo and sending thoughts and wishes into space. Most crew members write messages about their family and their team. Everyone usually has a chance to sign the logo, including teams from the customer, the satellite manufacturer and ILS.

Stage Separations

We had a successful liftoff about 20 minutes ago of our Proton M Breeze M rocket, which is carrying the Inmarsat-4 F3 satellite. The three stages of the Proton vehicle have performed as planned, and it is up to the Breeze M upper stage to complete the mission. The upper stage has begun its first burn, which is scheduled to last around 8 minutes. The vehicle, however, is out of range of a receiving station and we will not re-establish contact for another hour and 10 minutes. At that time we expect to receive confirmation of both the first and second burns.

First and Second Burn

The Breeze M upper stage of our Proton M rocket continues its climb into space with the Inmarsat-4 F3 satellite. We have received confirmation that the 1st and 2nd burns of the upper stage occurred and shut down as scheduled.

The next events are scheduled for around 2 hours from now. The Breeze M upper stage will ingite for a 3rd time and burn about 10 minutes; after that the additional propellant tank will be jettisoned, and the 4th burn will start. All this will happen in a span of about 20 minutes while the vehicle is again out of range of a ground station. We should reacquire the vehicle shortly after the 4th burn ends.

We have confirmed that the Breeze M upper stage has successfully completed its 3rd & 4th burns, as well as jettisoning its additional propellant tank. The vehicle is now in a 5-hour coast period, during which we will have nothing to report. The 5th burn is scheduled for around 3:25 a.m. Eastern time, or 7:25 GMT. Separation of the Inmarsat-4 spacecraft is scheduled to follow that by about 16 minutes.
