We selected this edition's topic from LIFTOFF reader submissions. This question came from Isabelle Desenclos, who read about the contest on the website. Ms. Desenclos works in satellite manufacturing Quality Assurance at EADS ASTRIUM. She recently attended the launch of BADR-4 in Baikonur and plans to watch the next launch live via the ILS webcast.
How is the launch window chosen for each launch?
In general terms, the launch window selection process starts with the satellite contractor, which determines the acceptable window, taking into account the spacecraft (SC) mission and destination. There are different launch constraints for different types of SC, depending on the mission objectives. Proton flies a mission profile specifically designed for each mission that optimizes the LV performance and provides the SC with as much on-orbit life as possible.
