Race For The Cure - ILS Rocketeers

On May 11, 2013 a team consisting of International Launch Services (ILS) employees, friends and family participated in the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure in Washington, DC.

During the early dawn of that morning, team members individually made their way via Metro to the DC race. Though some had a longer trip than others due to Metro closings and scheduled maintenance, everyone made it there on-time and ready to jog/walk/run.

The team name, ILS Rocketeers, not only symbolized their industry careers, but their commitment to elevating the cause. As team Captain, Arlette Romano chose the name and felt compelled to solicit her friends and family to participate, because of her personal connection with the cause.

“We all know someone with breast cancer, and sometimes it makes you feel helpless. But we are not helpless, and we wanted to show that.  It’s a compelling cause, a cause that affects so many globally.”

The rain held out during the race and the 7 members walked/jogged/ran 3.1 miles in less than 1 hour – one outstanding member, George Damian, ran the 5K race in 21 minutes and 40 seconds.

Combined they were able to raise $1,255 (the biggest fundraiser being Penelope Taft).  The donations go directly to benefit women by providing breast cancer health education, breast cancer screening and access to life-saving treatment programs in the National Capital Area, which has one of the highest breast cancer mortality rates in the country.

Romano added that she “would like to personally thank each team member for their participation and their fundraising effort - Great Job! I know I felt good supporting a life-saving cause, getting a great workout, and enjoying the camaraderie amongst my co-workers, family, and friends. So, thank you all.”

ILS congratulates its runners on a successful race and a triumphant spirit.
