Russian Federal Mission Express-AM4 Anomaly Investigation Underway

August 19, 2011 – On 18 August, at 3:25 a.m., a Proton Breeze M vehicle carrying the Express-AM4 satellite launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The Proton M launch vehicle performed nominally, and the ascent unit including the Breeze M upper stage and the spacecraft separated at the appropriate time. Contact with the Breeze M and spacecraft was lost after the fourth burn of the Breeze M upper stage. Roscosmos specialists were able to locate the Breeze M Upper Stage.  Efforts are now underway to establish contact with the Express-AM4 spacecraft.

Spacecraft Status and Completion of the Kosmos Hotel

The SES-3 (OS-2) spacecraft  is being prepared for fueling, which will take place 25 and 27 June (Baikonur time).  All testing and operations up to this point have been nominal.  The Breeze M upper stage engine, is installed on the tilter in preparation for joint operations with Khrunichev, which will begin on 29 June (BKR), marking another milestone in the SES-3 (OS-2) campaign.

SES-3 Campaign Kicks Off!

The SES-3 (OS-2) launch campaign team arrived in Baikonur on Sunday, June 5.  As they stepped off the charter aircraft at the Yubeleiny Airfield at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, they were greeted with high, dry heat and gusty winds – true desert weather.  No one could complain though, as the weather in Virginia was even hotter and humid to boot!

Ahh, Springtime and Telstar 14R!

Well, the inaugural launch campaign of 2011 has begun and its spring time in Baikonur.  The main team arrived at Baikonur Cosmodrome on Sunday, followed by the remainder of the Khrunichev team arriving on Tuesday, and everyone is here to get the campaign underway.  With the launch of the Telstar 14REstrela do Sul 2 satellite only a few weeks away, everyone is in work mode.  With the on-time arrival of the spacecraft, Wednesday at 10:00 am, all necessary hardware is now in building 92A-50.  The launch vehicle is sitting in Hall 111 undergoing final checkouts and the spacecraft has been transferred to Hall 103A for electrical health checks and the various other stand alone operations scheduled.  And after this first hectic week of preparations and equipment moves, everyone is settling in to the choreographed schedule of launch operations.  As it is a special holiday weekend around the world, many of the team will gather together for a special celebration dinner on Saturday night.  Happy Easter from Baikonur!

ILS and Satmex Announce ILS Proton Launch of the Satmex 8 Satellite in 2012

RESTON, Va. /Mexico City, Mexico, December 29, 2010 – International Launch Services (ILS) and Satellites Mexicanos S.A. de C.V. (Satmex) announce the launch of the Satmex 8 satellite on an ILS Proton. The satellite is under construction by Space Systems/Loral (SS/L).  ILS and Khrunichev are implementing a mission integration schedule to support a third quarter 2012 ILS Proton launch of Satmex 8 into geostationary transfer orbit from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.
