CAPE CANAVERAL AIR FORCE STATION, Fla., July 21, 2004 — The launch of an Atlas IIAS vehicle with a national security payload has been rescheduled to Aug. 31 to allow time to replace components in an avionics unit on the vehicle.

Engineers are replacing transistors in a Remote Control Unit (RCU), which is used to control several critical functions on the launch vehicle. Inspections have shown that the transistors presently used in certain critical control circuits in the RCU may contain conductive particles that can cause the circuits to fail.

Lockheed Martin, International Launch Services and the customer agreed upon the new launch date, which allows sufficient time for the RCU to be serviced and retested,
