Liftoff occurred at 8 :40 p.m. EDT, followed by successful spacecraft separation from the launch vehicle just under a half hour later. The launch was conducted by a combined team of Lockheed Martin, the United States Air Force and International Launch Services (ILS).

CAPE CANAVERAL Air Station, Fla., Oct. 21, 1997 – A Lockheed Martin Atlas IIA rocket is completing final preparations to launch a communications satellite for the U.S. Air Force at Cape Canaveral Air Station (CCAS), Fla. on October 24. The sixth in the series of spacecraft for the Defense Satellite Communications System III (DSCS III)program will be launched from Complex 36A at the opening of a 79-minute launch window that extends from 7:37 to 8:56 p.m. EDT. This is the seventh of eight planned Atlas missions from CCAS this year.
SAN DIEGO, Oct. 7, 1996 – Lockheed Martin’s Atlas launch vehicle has been selected for the U.S. Air Force’s Atlas IIAS program. A contract for one firm launch and five options was announced by the Air Force on Aug. 30, and an option for a second firm launch was exercised by the Air Force on Sept. 6. This brings the Atlas backlog of firm launch commitments to 29, six military and 23 commercial.
