Expanding the Proton Family to Serve the Broader GEO Market
ILS is now offering a modular 2-stage commercial launcher to address market and customer-driven demand for cost effective access to space for satellites in the 5 metric ton range.
The Proton Medium vehicle is derived from the flight-proven Proton Breeze M launch system. With the Proton Breeze M, the broader GEO satellite market is served with one family of vehicles.
The initial development of this two-stage vehicle has been simplified by focusing on eliminating the 3rd stage tank and engines. Modifications to the remaining hardware are primarily limited to the interstage adapter. The interstage adapter now interfaces directly with the booster equipment bay that houses the guidance, navigation and control (GNC) system, The lenghth of the interstage adapter is maintained to retain compatibility with the existing Proton Breeze M ground handling equipment. The low-cost, simplified approach maintains maximum hardware commonality with Proton Breeze M. Proton Medium is essentially a recreation of the original two-stage Proton booster (named “UR 500”) flown in the 1960s, but with the addition of the existing Breeze M upper stage and payload fairing.
