Proton in Final Preparation to Launch PanAmSat-8

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 28, 1998 – International Launch Services (ILS) announced today that a combined Russian and American team is conducting final preparations to launch a Proton rocket on November 4 with PanAmSat Corporation’s PAS-8 communications satellite aboard. The rocket is scheduled to lift off from Baikonur Cosmodrome in the Republic of Kazakhstan at 10:12 a.m. (9:12 p.m. USA Pacific Standard Time, Nov. 3). The launch window is ten minutes long.

Liftoff occurred at 3:19 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time.

Atlas Successfully Launches HOT BIRD 5 for Eutelsat

CAPE CANAVERAL Air Station, Fla., Oct. 9, 1998 – A Lockheed Martin Astronautics Atlas IIA rocket successfully launched the HOT BIRD 5 television broadcast satellite into geosynchronous transfer orbit this evening from Complex 36, Pad B. Liftoff occurred at 6:50 p.m. EDT. It was the fifth successful Atlas launch of 1998 from Cape Canaveral Air Station and the 40th consecutive successful flight.

Atlas III RD-180 Engine Successful Test Firing

HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA, July 29, 1998 – Lockheed Martin Astronautics made history today by successfully conducting the first test firing of a Russian rocket engine at a U.S. government facility. An RD-180 engine with its prototype Atlas IIIA rocket booster stage rumbled for 10 seconds at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

Liftoff occurred on time at 6:48 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. It was the fourth successful launch of 1998 for Atlas, the 39th consecutive successful flight, and the 550th overall flight of an Atlas booster.
