International Launch Services Announces Vice President of Programs and Operations and Chief Technical Officer

Reston, Virginia, November 5, 2012 - John Palmé has been appointed vice president of programs and operations and chief technical officer for International Launch Services (ILS) of Reston, Virginia. For the past four years, Palmé held the role of deputy vice president for mission assurance and program director. Palmé has also overseen the reliability and quality programs and the integration and launch of commercial spacecraft on ILS Proton.

Euroconsult World Satellite Business Week Launch Panel on September 12

The 14th annual Euroconsult World Satellite Business Week held September 10-15, 2012 in Paris, France, welcomed several hundred attendees including some of the most influential business executives in the commercial space industry. The session entitled “Launch Service Providers Seek the Right Tempo,”  on September 12, was moderated by Warren Ferster, Editor of Space News and included top executives from the commercial and government launch market: International Launch Services (ILS), Arianespace, Sea Launch, Lockheed Martin Commercial Launch Services, China Great Wall Industry Corp. and SpaceX.

Failure Review Oversight Board (FROB) Concludes Investigation

Wednesday, September 12, 2012-The Failure Review Oversight Board (FROB) concluded the review of the Russian State Commission report on September 11 concerning the root cause of the Russian Federal Telkom-3/Express MD-2 mission failure which occurred on August 7.  The FROB agreed with the Russian State Commission that the root cause of the failure was due to a component of the pressurization system that was not manufactured to specifications.  This caused a shutdown of the Breeze M Main engine by the Breeze M flight control system 7 seconds into the planned 18 minute and 5 second 3rd burn.

Russian Federal Mission with TELKOM 3 and EXPRESS MD2 Satellites Anomaly Investigation Underway; Russian State Commission Established

On 7 August at 1:31 a.m. local time, a Proton Breeze M vehicle carrying the Express MD2 and Telkom 3 satellites launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The Proton M launch vehicle performed nominally, however, the Orbital Unit (OU), comprised of the Breeze M upper stage and the two spacecraft, did not properly reach its transfer orbit and was placed into an off-nominal intermediate orbit. The Aerospace Defense and Roscosmos, are currently monitoring the OU and efforts are now underway to establish contact with the Express MD2 and Telkom 3 satellites.

ILS Proton Successfully Launches SES-5 for SES

BAIKONUR COSMODROME, Kazakhstan, July 10, 2012– International Launch Services (ILS), a leading launch services provider for the global commercial satellite industry, successfully carried the SES-5 satellite into geostationary transfer orbit today on an ILS Proton for SES of Luxembourg (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG). This was the 21th SES satellite launched on ILS Proton, the 23rd launch of a Space Systems/Loral satellite, and the 74th ILS Proton launch overall.
